I was sitting at work today staring at the computer screen during a 15 minute break. I was thinking of how I could help HR but I saw photos of children homeless in Chile. I saw women crying over lost family members. It was horrifying and then I thought about my own personal bouts. I've seen someone die from heart disease and another man die from cancer. What have I done to help those in need? What have I done to help the world instead of thinking of myself? So, I thought it is time to use my greed as innovation for a better tomorrow.

I don't know what you think of this idea but I want to turn Hybrid Realms into a charity. It may not be much but it is something that I think we could do to help out communities in need. I was thinking of every 3 months, paying .50 per active member towards a charity that YOU, the people, decide upon. Whether it be for the goodwill or the cancer society of America. But, this type of decision is upon YOU, the people. I don't expect any outside donations but I will pick up the tab every 3 months and pay for this donation. It is the least I can do even for the members of HR who have had diseases or still do.

I want your opinions and if you think it is a bad one. Tell me. I just want to try my best to make a difference in a world so wrought with pain and suffering.

That really kool an all but what if we cant afford to pay this little donation. Is this gonna be a mandatory thing??

I like this idea, except for the part where you pick up the tab. One person should not be strapped with paying out the donations; therefore I suggest finding some sort of sponsor.

The kind of sponsor I'm talking about is one of those companies that keep track of page hits (for example) and donate a predetermined amount per hit. Some research is in order here, but I do think that this is a more realistic approach to donating to a certain cause.

@Joy: The members themselves would NOT be donating their own money. Seeing as on a basic level, everyone in HR is basically unable to donate money for some reason or another, Kenny figured this would be a better way to get the HR community involved in bettering the world.

Although it is a good and admirable idea, I dont understand why people take on things like this on a personal level. I'm sorry but I gotta take care of myself before I go and take care of someone else would most likely wouldnt do the same for me. Hate to burst your bubbles and be an asshole Angi and I really do...but who is gonna sponser a make believe web site? I mean, HR isnt even busy enough to catch the attention of any serious sponsers.

Robb, this is more than a "make believe" web site. This is a community, and what better for a community to do than to do what it can to help its fellow human. We all struggle for one reason or another, and I think more people would be willing to assist to that goal than you think.

Personally, I have no proof that the money we give is going to go to any specific charity. I'm sure you're trying to get our opinion upon the matter before you come to a consensus as to what charity but giving one person one lump sum doesn't seem safe to me. Even opening a separate account still gives one person accountability. Me no likey. If you could find a way around this I'd give five bucks, and it'd have to be a good charity.

All money would either be followed up with a receipt or I like to use paypal so I can post everything that has come in. This way everyone can view all the receipts, and if anyone sees their money not posted, obviously it was stolen. This is one way to know all the money is going to where it is going. Receipts and proof of donation. All would be posted.

But it is a make believe site, and it is a community...a community of 5-8 people, and if I'm wrong please correct me as I'm not in here as often as I'd like to be but when I do pop in theres only a small hand full of people. I dont mean to upset anyone but I dont like it...might sound selfish...but its my opinion so lick my taint

Thats a rather depressing opinion which I for one whole heartedly disagree with...and I wont be licking anything. This place is a community, and better than a lot of other ones out there, so perhaps some appreciation of that fact would be nice.

Anyway, as for the matter at hand. Arent there specific 'relief for haiti' charities/organizations out there who's whole purpose is to accept donations from people to help with that effort. From what I hear there's more than one of them and they're all over the country. Isnt looking into that a worth while endevour?, you know to see if they accept donations in the manner disscused above, and also if/how they accept from sites like this and what not?

This is a noble idea and can give you information on how to set this up, since I did something like this when I was in college. You need to find the charity which your interested in, contact them and ask them how you can set up a donation fund to give them based off your website, they will provide you with all the information and how grow and make your donations bigger then you and your site, and how to grow a community.

Dance4Life was the charity my community grew from, started off with two people and myself and the person that I worked with grew into 60 something people. And we started off as a small facebook group and grew into 60 people, and we donated some money and held events too. It was a lot of fun and was the best thing I did for Dance4Life, which is still a charity I try to participate in when I can. Proud to say I went to one Dance4Life concert, and plan to buy some of the merchandise soon since the profits go to the charity.

First step, pick a charity or a foundation that you can contact.

Do not ever fall in love if you cannot accept that people make mistakes, there are times we will screw up and we are no where near perfect.
